An Bang Beach

Hoi An's laid-back beach — 4km from the old town by bicycle, beach cafes, homestays, and a quieter alternative to My Khe.

An Bang is Hoi An’s beach. It sits 4km east of the old town — a flat, easy cycle through rice paddies and quiet village lanes. The beach is long and sandy, mostly given over to small cafes and beach bars with thatched roofs and sun loungers. No big resort towers, no beachfront hotel corridor. Beach erosion that’s affected other parts of the coast has been less severe here, making it the stronger swimming option in recent years.

The short version

  • Best for: slow travellers, cyclists, those who want both beach and old town in one base
  • Distance to Hoi An old town: 4km; 15 minutes by bike, ₫30,000–50,000 by Grab
  • Distance to Da Nang: 30km; ₫200,000–250,000 Grab
  • Accommodation: homestays, small boutique guesthouses, no large chains
  • Beach season: February to August is reliable; October–January brings swell and sometimes flooding

The vibe

This is the quieter version of a beach holiday. The cafe culture at An Bang is particular to it — plastic chairs and cold Huda beer, fresh seafood at family restaurants, a few more polished spots with cocktails and decent food. It hasn’t been overbuilt. On a weekday in shoulder season you get a sun lounger and a view without fighting for it.

The cycling route from the old town is the thing that makes An Bang work as a base. It’s flat, scenic, and takes about 15–20 minutes depending on how often you stop. The route passes through Cẩm Thanh commune, which has mangrove boat tours (small round bamboo coracles piloted by guides — genuinely enjoyable, especially for kids) if you want a detour. Most guesthouses here provide bicycles free or for a small hire fee, so you’re not Grabbing everywhere.

Accommodation

No brand hotels, which keeps the feel intact. Options run from simple homestays (₫300,000–500,000/night) to small boutique properties with pools (₫1,500,000–2,500,000/night). The Hoi An Golden Holiday Hotel & Spa sits on the main road to the beach and includes free bikes — practical if you plan to cycle regularly. CHiEM Hoi An and AIRA Boutique are well-regarded smaller properties closer to the sand.

Where to eat

Beach bars serve food all day — grilled fish, fresh spring rolls, cold beer. Pricing is tourist-level but reasonable; expect ₫80,000–150,000 for a main dish. For cheaper options, the lane running parallel to the beach has a few family-run spots with lower prices.

The cycling route to the old town puts you 20 minutes from Hoi An’s full food scene — cao lau, bánh mì, white rose dumplings, the morning market. That accessibility is a big part of why An Bang works as a base. See Hoi An old town guide for where to eat in the old town. Beach conditions

Generally calm and swimmable from February through August. Waves pick up from September, and October through December brings rain, occasional flooding, and rough surf — not ideal for a beach-focused trip. Check conditions before booking in that window. Getting around from An Bang

Cycling to the old town handles most of what you need day-to-day. Grab for anything further — to Da Nang city centre it’s ₫200,000–250,000; to the Marble Mountains roughly ₫150,000–180,000.

The road between An Bang and Hoi An is flat enough that even confident non-cyclists manage it without stress. See getting around Da Nang for full transport options across the region.

An Bang or Hoi An old town area?

The trade-off is direct: An Bang gives you the beach outside your door; the old town area puts you inside the atmosphere in the evenings. For a longer stay, split between both. For a short trip, Hoi An puts you closer to the lanterns, the tailors, and the riverside restaurants — the cycling to the beach is still available, just adds 15 minutes. For a pure beach base in the Hoi An region, An Bang is the right call.
