The Japanese Covered Bridge, or Chua Cau, is Hoi An's signature landmark and the image on the 20,000 dong note. Built by the town's Japanese community in the early 1600s to link their quarter to the Chinese one, it's a short covered span with a small temple set into its side and carved guardian animals at each end. A recent restoration has it looking crisp again. It's one of the sites your Old Town ticket covers, and it's busiest at dusk when the lanterns come on and the crowd thickens for photos. Early morning is calmer if you want it to yourself.
